How is it possible that the greatest human suffering over the last two decades has happened without us knowing or even caring? “OUT OF THE DARKNESS, CONGO UNITES” takes us to the precarious eastern boarder of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Over the last 20 years, this region has seen more chaos and death than any place on the planet. War, tribal animosity, a complexity of rebel groups, extreme poverty and sexual violence shielded by almost complete impunity make life more than challenging. Yet, this is the location for a student peace and reconciliation movement called Congo Unites. This 5-day intensive conference sets the backdrop for the documentary to examine the difficult life these students have been born into. During the conference the young leaders learn to lay down their long-held prejudice and tribal identities to embrace the idea of unity as “Congolese”. The harsh details of Congo’s turbulent history and chaotic current events, including a potentially explosive election in 2016, can’t deflate the contagious hope found in the young Congolese who are determined to see a better Congo become a reality now.

FEEDING OBESITY is a documentary that I produced, wrote and directed. The film looks at the obesity epidemic through the experience of four obese individuals. Each of them want to change their life, none have been able to so far. Feeding Obesity offers help – not only to the four participants, but to anyone who is mired in the trap of obesity. We learn that dieting is actually the enemy and eating is truly the only way to succeed. We learn that food addictions are real but they can be overcome. We learn that exercise is helpful but not the answer to weight loss. And we learn that all of us are better when we become honest with ourselves and learn to look to others for support. Finally, we discover that it comes down to ME. The obesity epidemic can only be defeated when each of us takes a personal stand, making choices that promote health, regardless of the cultural, political, and financial factors contributing to the epidemic.
